NEW YORK — The previous time Tyson Gay entered
the starting blocks in the 200 meters, at the Olympic Trials last July,
he fell to the track well before the midpoint of the race with a pulled
hamstring that derailed his Beijing Olympic plans.
By the time he was halfway through the turn in the 200 at Saturday's Reebok Grand Prix, he had already made up the stagger and was drawing oohs from the crowd at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island. There was even more of a reaction at the finish with the announcement of his winning time, 19.58 seconds, with runner-up Wallace Spearmon .40 seconds behind.
