Runner’s feat lost in wake of record: The Register-Guard, Eugene, Ore.Published by
It’s tough to get noticed when you compete in a track meet that produces a world record in the 100 meters. Eugene’s Lauren Fleshman found herself in that position last Saturday night. The Oregon Track Club Elite runner became the ninth woman in U.S. history to break 15 minutes in the 5,000 meters after clocking a PR of 14 minutes, 58.48 seconds to win the race at the Reebok Grand Prix in Randall’s Island, N.Y. Fleshman, 26, who will line up in the 1,500 at the 34th annual Prefontaine Classic on Sunday, was cooling down after her race outside Icahn Stadium when the estimated crowd of 6,000 erupted with noise.
